virtually 100 dead in Indian temple blaze

A massive fire swept through a temple in India’s southern Kerala state on Sunday, killing nearly 100 people and injuring more than 200 who had gathered for a fireworks display to mark the start of the local Hindu new year.

Thousands of devotees had packed into the Puttingal Devi temple in the coastal district of Kollam.

The fireworks display began at midnight and went on for hours.

The fire started when one of the crackers fell onto a shed where the fireworks were stored, said residents near the temple site, about 70 km from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew to Kollam with a team of doctors to help state authorities cope with the large number of injured people, moving swiftly to pre-empt criticism over lack of public safety.

“The fire at the temple in Kollam is heart-rending and shocking beyond words,” he said in a Twitter post.

“My thoughts are with families of the deceased and prayers with the injured.”

Modi has faced public criticism in the past for failing to respond quickly to disasters such as the floods in Chennai late last year.

Large parts of the metropolis were under water for days before government help arrived.

Kerala’s Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said 97 people were dead in the temple fire, many of whom were trapped by flames in the temple building, adding that 245 were injured.

Television images showed people, some clutching children with burn injuries, being taken to hospitals.

The federal government also ordered the military to help the Kerala state authorities with two navy ships sailing to Kollam with medical supplies.

With Kerala in the midst of an election for a new state assembly, the temple fire quickly turned into a political issue as local leaders demanded an investigation into the fireworks display.

In Kerala, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party trails its rivals the Congress party and the communists.

Kerala’s Chief Minister Chandy said the Kollam district administration had denied the temple authorities permission to carry out the fireworks display, and that the government would investigate how they went ahead.

“There was no permission to even store the fireworks,” he said.

Police has registered a case against the temple authorities for negligence. The temple trust was not immediately available for comment.

Kerala is studded with temples, managed by rich and powerful trusts that often flout local regulations.

Each year temples carry out fireworks displays, often competing to stage the most spectacular ones. There are judges who decide the winners.

Kollam district magistrate A. Shainamol said people living in the neighbourhood of the temple had complained about the danger of these fireworks in the past.

The explosion from the fireworks was so strong that some parts of the temple roof caved in.
Local media showed bulldozers trying to clear the area of the debris.

The Puttingal temple is one of the oldest in the state. It was built on the site of an ant hill where locals believe a goddess appeared centuries ago.

Fulani herdsmen kill university staff, farmer in Delta

Perez Brisibe
ABRAKA – MEMBER representing Ethiope East constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Evans Iwhurie, weekend, said suspected Fulani herdsmen shot dead a staff of the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka and a farmer at their farms in cold blood at Abraka.

The lawmaker while lamenting the menace of some Fulani herdsmen in the area said one of the victims, Mr. Francis Okotie, 52 and father of 8 was a senior staff of the university attached to the university library.

Giving details on the incident, Iwhurie explained that, Mr. Okotie was shot twice, on his arm and on the back of his head in an execution style at his plantain and palm oil plantation farm where he had gone to fumigate.

“It is easy to identify the culprits because they always leave behind trails of cattle excreta, and damaged crops by their herds,” he stated.

According to him, the killing of the university staff is coming on the heels of a similar incident involving an indigene of Abraka, Philip Obayendo who was shot and matcheted in pieces by his assailants at his farm at Oria-Abraka.

Speaking further, he said: “The decomposed corpse of Philip, a farmer, was discovered 5days after he was last seen going to his farm.

“Though this is a menace that has been occurring around the country, these two cases are a few of many that have befallen the people of my constituency especially at the Abraka area” brightnlere.blogspot.com

Oil Subsidy Scam: How I arrived at $32bn figure – oil-subsidy-scam-how-i-arrived-at-32bn-figure-saraki/

ABUJA – FORWARD o the expected judgment of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, following yesterday’s commencement of his trial over false assets declaration when he held sway as governor of Kwara State, Senate President, Bukola Saraki may throw in the towel by resigning from his position any movement from now, Vanguard learnt. Senator Bokola Saraki In other not to be humiliated while on the throne, some senators including those who had vowed to remain with him to the end of his trial at the anti-graft court, yesterday, asked the Senate President to consider the resignation option so as to save the Senate, as an institution. Vanguard gathered that the option was thrown to him at a special meeting held by a group of some loyal senators, who followed him to his Maitama residence, shortly after the end of yesterday’s trial at the court. But as Saraki is considering the option, senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, appeared to be at loggerhead with their counterparts in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over the Senate President’s successor. While the APC senators are insisting on producing Saraki’s successor, those of the PDP are favorably disposed to anointing one of their own, a development that has further polarized the Red Chamber. A senator of the PDP fold, who spoke to Vanguard late yesterday, but on condition that his identity would not be mentioned, said Saraki was given the option of resigning basically to save the institution of the legislature. ‘”I can confirm to you that at a special meeting held yesterday, we asked the Senate President to consider the option of resignation. “We believe that doing so would preserve the institution of the Senate, “he said, refusing to speak further. Asked whether the Senate President was considering the resignation option, the lawmaker said ‘” this was just thrown at him this evening. We believe that he would do the right thing.'”. Meanwhile, names of senators Abdullahi Adamu, representing Nasarawa West from the APC and Suleiman Adokwe of the PDP were being touted as possible replacements of the Senate President to press time.
